SAL and AFC Merge

1st August 2025

WHFC has been in the SAL since 1928, and this week saw the biggest change in the league's history. Saturday afternoon amateur football has evolved significantly over the past 20 years with falling participation, grounds being sold off, and clubs folding. On Wednesday 30th July, the SAL and AFC (Amateur Football Combination) voted to merge, creating the biggest amateur league in Europe (possibly the world?) consisting of no less than 312 teams. A new era, and hopefully the start of a revival of the local game we love.
